Durango School District 9-R is a high-performing school district that was first established in 1881. It was the ninth school district to be formed in La Plata County, hence the “9.” During the late 1950’s, the district was reorganized, incorporating 12 rural school districts, changing the name to District 9-Reorganized, or 9-R for short. Today 9-R is known as “a community committed to innovation and excellence in education,” serving approximately 5,000 students.
In addition, Durango also has Animas High School, a public charter school that received one of the highest ratings at GreatSchools.org, with a curriculum that prepares students to do the critical thinking, writing, and analysis necessary for college success. Animas High School has been recently selected as a John Irwin School of Excellence.
Animas Valley Elementary, Riverside Elementary, and Sunnyside Elementary all received the highest ratings at GreatSchools.org, with some noting that these schools have a strong sense of community, with teachers and staff that care about the students, and parent involvement in the schools is strongly encouraged.
